This article features the colourful career of Maurice Marechal. Apart from being a fine international solo cellist, he was an important collaborator with many composers in the development of cello repertoire – working with Saint-Saens, Ravel, Honegger, Caplet, Durosoir, Tansmann, Ropartz amongst others. His cello sound was a centre of attraction; he is credited with having helped established today’s view of French music as beautiful, refined, with endless shadings of colour. A pivotal figure in the twenty-century cello world!
